True Son

The producing duo of Jhanvi and Ketaki Shriram approached me about directing and shooting this feature-length documentary film about 21-year old Michael Tubbs, a kid from the streets who is trying to save his dying hometown by running for city council. After meeting Michael, I immediately realized that he was the next Barack Obama. I settled on a verite, run-and-gun style to give the film a scrappy, underdog feel, just like the campaign, as well as to keep up with the frenetic pace of our subjects. The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2014 and after a theatrical run was acquired by FusionTV, a channel owned by Disney and Univision. The film was well reviewed by the Huffington Post, Newsweek, Hollywood Reporter, and the LA Times.

"True Son is a heartening portrait of a grassroots political campaign... the brisk, bright doc is nearly enough to restore faith in a long-tarnished system" - Hollywood Reporter
